Last week, a jury of our fellow New Yorkers unanimously convicted Donald Trump on 34 counts of falsifying business records.
In bringing this case, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg achieved something monumental: he proved that no one—not even a former president—is above the law.
Donald Trump is now a felon. But his campaign continues. And Democrats can not afford to let up our fight for even a moment.
I often hear from New Yorkers that while they hope Trump doesn’t win, they believe our status as a blue state would protect us from the worst of a second Trump presidency. I wish that were true, but it’s not.
GOP control of the White House and Congress would mean the imposition of policies on our state that are deeply contrary to our interests and values.
Our streets could be flooded with guns by a national open carry law.
Our election freedoms could be curtailed by a ban on mail-in ballots.
And, of course, reproductive rights could be denied by national restrictions on abortion.
Trump and his allies in Congress would likely also attack New York City using the budget's power. They could try to kill funding for major infrastructure projects here, like the next phase of the Second Avenue subway or the new Gateway rail tunnel under the Hudson.
Once back in power, Trump and his allies could also threaten to cut federal education funding to our schools if we don’t adopt a curriculum consistent with their MAGA values. They could even try to block schools from requiring MMR vaccines for children (This is not hypothetical; Trump has already threatened this).
The list of harms a second Trump presidency would do to NYC is long. We need to do everything in our power to prevent it
Our state is on the front lines of this year’s election battle.
Recent polls show the presidential race in New York is closer than at any point in recent history. There are as many as seven competitive congressional races here, the results of which will determine control of the House.
We have much work to do over the next five months. We need to ensure President Biden wins New York with a commanding margin, send a message nationally, and help Democratic congressional candidates in competitive races across our state.
We also need to project our organizing energy to swing states beyond New York to block Trump—now a convicted felon—from ever getting anywhere near power again.

I am ready to go all in on this fight. I know you are too.
